#1 - Hoyts Cinemas Frankston

#1 - Hoyts Frankston - 06/01/2023

So my first cinema, my first film for the year and my most visited cinema before this endeavour. Hoyts Frankston is my local cinema and where I see most movies every year.

Originally the cinema was opened as an AMC (Australian Multiplex Cinemas) and I remember it being a big deal when it opened up. There were two other cinemas in the Frankston CBD. Both of them were on the Nepean Highway. One was a small, 2 screen cinema that offered cheap ticket prices. The other was a multiplex that I don’t remember going to that often (likely because of the cheaper option across the road).

The movie I saw for my first-new visit was Operation Fortune: Ruse de Geurre. It’s the latest film from director Guy Ritchie. It’s also been a film that’s been a long-time coming, having been delayed last year unexpectedly. It kept getting pushed, and pushed, before finally just disappearing from the release schedule entirely.

Until a month.or so ago when the film finally popped up again as a future release. Though I wasn’t holding my breath that it would actually come out as I had been burned before. However, not only did I actually get to see the film, I got to see the film a week before its wide release. Hoyts was doing advance screenings the weekend before so after work on Friday I seized my chance to see it.

And I was happy with my choice. A few years back Ritchie made a film adaptation of the TV series The Man From U.N.C.L.E (which I love, and I saw at Hoyts Frankston). Operation Fortune is kind of like a lesser UNCLE. Which isn’t a bad thing, I had a lot of fun with the movie. It’s a globe-trotting, adventure, spy film with lots of humour and action. What’s not to love?

I really like this cinema, as far as multiplex, chain cinemas go. Every seat in the house is a reclining, leather chair. It’s clean, well-run and shows most mainstream releases. I would love a wider variety of releases but I’m sure attendance data tells Hoyts that we’re a bunch of uncultured swine down here in Frankston.

Whatever the reason, it’s not the end of the world as I don’t have to travel too far to find note highbrow fare.
